Assam People’s Welfare Association (APWA), Trans -Yamuna, Delhi-NCR celebrated its maiden Rongali Bihu festival in the Central Park,Shipra Suncity, Indirapuram,  Ghaziabad on 19th April 2014. Assam People’s Welfare Association is a non-political, socio- cultural body formed only very recently by people having roots in Assam but residing in the east Trans-Yamuna areas of Delhi and NCR. Its main objective is to work for the spreading of  Assamese culture outside Assam and also to take up activities serving the interest of the state of Assam and its people.
The Rongali Bihu festival started with the lighting of the sacred lamp by Mr. Nripendra Kumar  Bharali, Managing Director (HR and Business Development), Oil India Ltd. Inaugurating the cultural event, he in his speech expressed happiness that due to organizations like APWA, people from other parts of the country are also getting an exposure to the multihued cultures of Assam and North -East. He conveyed his best wishes to APWA in its efforts. Mr. Romen Dutta, President of the Association, in his speech gave a brief background about the Association. He informed that all involved with the Association had worked hard to stage the cultural progamme within a very short period. “Japi”- the Rangali Bihu souvenir of the Association for the year 2014 was also unveiled by Mr. N.K. Tamuli.
The cultural programme began with a chorus-“Aji Bondoki Chondere” sung by the lady members of the Association. It was followed by Bihu Hussoris, Group Dance to a song of Jyoti Prasad,Jhumur dance, Orchestra –both classical and western and modern Assamese songs. All these performances were enacted by local budding kids and members of the Association. There was also a thematic fashion-show displaying the different ethnic costumes of Assam enacted also by the members of the Association. The audience present applauded all the performances with standing ovations which were perfectly managed in break-free continuity without any lapses. After the performances by the local artistes, it was the turn an invited Bihu Hussori Group to take over the stage. The Bihu group enthralled the audience with Bihu Hussori and dance in accordance with prevailing Bihu spirit amongst the audience. The grand finale of the function was performance by the popular singer, composer and music director from Assam- Mr. Manas-Robin. He kept the audience engrossed for more than an hour with his melodious Bihu songs and some of his other chart-busters.
At the end of the programme Mr. Manish Goswami, General Secretary of the Association, expressed gratitude to all involved with the Association in enacting the event with such a success. He expressed his confidence that with the blessings of all, the Association will keep on organizing such programmes in future in a more befitting manner. The curtain to the joyous celebration of music, song and dance was drawn with rendition of the state anthem of Assam-“O Mor Aponar Desh” by the lady members of the Association where all participated standing.
The organizers also arranged dinner of mouth-watering Assamese cuisine in the venue to the delight of the motley audience.
